Gluten-Free Birthday Goodies

I'm kind of a junk food junkie. When people ask me what I miss the most now that I'm gf, I tell them the truth... Oreos. Sad, isn't it? Not fresh-baked rosemary bread or deep dish pizza or homemade pasta. I miss Oreos. Because, let's face it, the gf Oreo substitutes are generally pretty blech. Give me my preservatives! I'm eating an OREO, for crying out loud, it SHOULD be bad for me!

Anyway, I digress.

Yesterday was my birthday. In two weeks it will be my gluten-free birthday (the anniversary of when I gave up gluten and my whole life changed), but more on that later.

Because it was my birthday and I'm a junk-food junkie, I enjoyed the following, all of which are happily gluten-free! If you love a sweet treat, read on...

Icees are gluten-free! Hooray! There's some dispute about the piƱa colada flavor, but a) I've never even seen that flavor, and I drink quite a few Icees... and b) yuck. Cherry is safe, as are cola and blue raspberry.

The best part? I bought a giant one, so there were free refills (at least at the venue I was visiting). Yay! Though I did learn that after two giant Icees all I want is to eat carrots and celery for the rest of my life. It turns out that there CAN be too much of a good thing, even on your birthday...

I have been missing sour candy SO much. Before my gf-life began, I loved Sour Patch Kids and Trolli Sour Brite Worms. Loved them. Now both make me sick, albeit in the muted cross-contamination way, not in the sick-for-days way. Still, that's not a price I'm willing to pay for something that's unhealthy to eat anyway.

Enter: Sour Dots. They have a great sour kick a la Sour Patch and some tasty sour flavors, including green apple. They come in a giant box, so I snacked on this one for several several days. It's goodness that keeps on giving!

And for my final (and by far tastiest and most refined) treat: FiddleCakes. FiddleCakes is a Nashville bakery that does both glutenous and gluten-free goodies. Their treats are SO delicious.

My husband stopped by to pick up anything tasty they might have to offer, as their gf-treats differ from day to day. We were both sad to discover that their pickings are kind of slim on Mondays (the weekend is big for them), but he still managed to bring me home a vanilla cupcake and a brownie. The cupcake was clearly baked a few days ago (so sad!) and was not very good, but the brownie brought me great joy. Yay for bakeries of the gluten-free variety!

FiddleCakes also offers you a free cupcake during your birthday month if you sign up on their mailing list. Well worth it, if you live in the area.

Yum, yum, yum, and happy birthday!
