I was thrilled to accept a call to pastor here, don't get me wrong. I couldn't wait to start pursuing my vocation in a beautiful town with some really incredible people. I love the church, and I've been chomping at the bit to find the right call and start doing full-time ministry!
But what would I eat? Would I drive an hour to Madison or over an hour to Milwaukee to raid Whole Foods? Would I survive on meat and produce, with the occasional bowl of stale Rice Chex?
Not a bit! I've only been "boots in country" for a week, and I've already found a whole host of gf options in the area. Stores, restaurants, products. Hallelujah.
Today my parents took me to Mac's Pizza Shack in Janesville (forgive the lack of original pictures - I'm still unpacking, and my camera cord is currently MIA...):
It is, as it sounds, nothing fancy. The title includes the word "Shack," after all. But it is pizza. And it is gf. And it is ten miles from my house.
The food was super affordable, and they have several specials going on right now because of the economy. For non gf-ers, there's a lunch buffet for $5.99. For gf-ers there's tasty thin-crust pizza with a wide variety of toppings. The crusts they use are pre-frozen and ordered from a company, but as the woman who helped us admitted, it's hard to bake a good gf pizza crust. Don't I know it! This crust was tasty enough that I didn't mind a bit it was pre-frozen.
They also offer gf chicken tenders, and they passed my mom's gf question list (separate pans, separate utensils, separate ingredients). The service was great and one of the employees even came out to our table later to check on us, asking specifically if the gf food was done to our specification.
I gleefully ate half of a pizza and have had no tummy rumblings whatsoever.
Did I mention that this is ten miles from my house? And that they offer take-out? Dangerous, I tell you...
Thanks, Mac's! I'll be back to your shack!
Oh I'm so happy for you! We don't do gf pizza out often because we like the way we make it at home so much better. But it sure is nice to know that it's available right around the corner! So glad for you!
