Cravings, Mom-to-Be Style

People have asked me a lot about cravings. It seems to be a common pregnancy question, and one I mind much less than the also common, "Whoa! You are about to POP! Are you due RIGHT NOW?!" (Seriously, don't EVER ask a pregnant woman this, unless you actually see a baby emerging from her body at that moment.)

I don't have a lot of cravings. During the first trimester I had a lot of food aversions (there was a whole week where I couldn't ingest anything but Country Time Lemonade and Strawberry Applesauce...), but few cravings. I enjoyed citrus fruits and juices more than usual, but that was about it.

The second trimester brought with it some normalcy. I could eat what I wanted, when I wanted, and nothing really disagreed with me.

Now in the third trimester, there's getting to be much less room for the beh-beh in there. My stomach is squished up higher than normal, so meals need to be smaller and more frequent. And the cravings have returned. There are two things that I could eat all day, every day.

First, watermelon. Pink, juicy, fruity, melt-in-your-mouth watermelon. Between my husband and I, we're probably eating two or three of these a week. I love them. I love them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I'm sure my new watermelon obsession has something to do with the weather. Last week the average temperature was 102 (with a high of 106!), and this week is in the 90s. I drink tons of water, but my body still craves more. Watermelon is a way of getting more liquid in me with a snack, to boot.

Secondly, macaroni and cheese. Specifically, Annie's Rice Pasta Macaroni and Cheese. I love this. I adore it. I could eat three boxes a day, but then I would break our bathroom scale. So I limit myself to one box every two days. But oh, is it good.

If you have kids, what did you crave when you were pregnant? If you don't have kids, what have you been craving lately?

  1. I had to laugh when I saw your watermelon comment. I was pregnant last summer and literally could not get enough of it--I went through at least 1 a week by myself (my husband won't eat it--what is wrong with him??) We let our little one taste it for the first time this week and he LOVED it--must be because that's essentially what he "ate" while in the womb every day! My other big one was french dip sandwiches--must have been the protein and salt that I wanted because I had never ordered one before being pregnant and haven't wanted one since then!

I craved jello with cool whip and then tomatoes with Aleah. Craved lots of meat with Sophi, probably has something to do with waitressing at a steak house =)

  3. With my first child I wanted Mexican and Wendy's chili. The chili thing is funny because I have never been a big meat eater. With my second child it was green curry made as spicy as the restaurant could make it. Yum!

  4. @Sarah - hooray for watermelon! @She Sewed - I remember your tomato cravings well. And wasn't it when there was some salmonella outbreak, so most were recalled? Poor you! @Betsy - that's the unsettling part - often I crave things I normally wouldn't like at all! I'm getting more and more interested to meet this little baby - I think it has some interesting tastes...

  5. Tacos. I wanted veggie tacos all the time when I was pregnant.

  6. With my first - apples (2 a day!), blueberries, chips and salsa and salami. Just had the second and I never really craved with her. It was more like this horrible power of suggestion take over. I would see someone eat something (or even just say what they were having for dinner) and I had to have it!
