I gave Stitch Fix one last chance.
If this box was a complete miss, I'd be done for good.
I'd dutifully updated my style profile the last two times. I'd tried everything on, as they instructed. And still - nothing worked. I asked for classic, and they sent kooky. I asked for affordable, and they sent notsomuchaffordable. I was about to throw in the towel, but I decided to try one more time.
I really, really wanted this to work. It could be so fun! So convenient! If only it worked...
It helped that I had a referral credit from my friend Beth (thanks, Beth!), so I didn't have to pay the usual styling fee. I didn't mind trying one more time for free.
(Whenever anyone says "for free," I picture that clip from Bridesmades with Rebel Wilson and that awful tattoo where she explains how she got it... "Some guy pulled up in a van and was like, 'Want a tattoo? It's for freeeee!'" Makes me laugh every time.)
The Stitch Fix stylists did SO much better this go-round! Yay!!!
First up, a classic black dress.
(Also - I chopped my hair off again! Woohoo!)
In the summer I preach in a simple black dress, and I currently only have one that fits. This will be my second. It is classic, elegant, and made of a really sturdy knit so it won't wrinkle easily and will hold up to multiple wearings.
It also reached my KNEES! Yay! I have a super short torso and really long legs, so finding a dress that hits at the knee and isn't that awkward mid-thigh length (a BIG no-no for preaching) is such a delight.
If this dress was the only thing I got from all my Stitch Fix tries, it'd be worth the price of a few boxes of duds.
Secondly, a striped black-and-cream dress.
This was almost a no-go. I tried it on and my husband said, so sweetly, "Wow, that would even work if you got pregnant again someday!"
(Note to all you men out there - do NOT ever say this if you want a woman to think she looks good in an outfit!)
But then I styled it with a cardigan (as per the dress's helpful styling card) and saw its potential. It's light and airy, but classic enough to wear to the office. With flip flops it could work easily at the beach. The tie around the middle helped hide my postpartum tummy. And oh, it was so, so soft.
The next three things I am iffy on. Can you help me decide?
Third was a cobalt blue blazer with a gold button.
I'm not sure about this one. It clearly scared the cat away, for one thing.
It has an awful gold button (that screams either "I'm a sailor!" or "I'm a super old lady!"), but I could replace that. I love the color, but I'm about five pounds away from fitting in it perfectly. I still have a bit of baby weight on me, so it would likely fit in the next month or two.
What do you think?
Next was a polka dot top with a Peter Pan collar.
(I do NOT know why I have my hand up like that in all these pictures. It must be my "Does this look good?" pose. Ach.)
I love Peter pan collars. I really do. Now that I'm back to my pixie haircut, I love them even more.
But I wonder if the fluttery sleeves AND the Peter Pan collar AND the polka dots are a bit much. I wonder if they say, "Hi! I'm cute and fun!" rather than "I am adult and responsible enough to help you with your pastoral needs."
In the photo, the top also looks very smock-like and boxy, which I don't love.
I'm also worried that I look like an art-therapy student, not a pastor.
What do you think?
And finally, a delicate gold necklace.
I love small, gold jewelry. I often wear gold earrings, and this necklace would be versatile enough to wear with a lot of different things. It's also a good message for a minister to proclaim (1 John all the way, baby!).
Plus, now that I'm a mama, I need to wear things that don't dangle low enough that my son thinks they're toys and tries to forcibly rip them from my neck. Our little guy is STRONG!
What do you think? Did my stylist finally get me? Should I keep all five items (there's a 25% discount for keeping all five, which would basically make the necklace and half of the Peter Pan top free), or is that crazy-go-nuts?
If I do keep them all, this will be my last Stitch Fix box for awhile, as that will basically knock out my spring clothing budget in one fell swoop. But hey - no time wasted going to the mall, and I needed a couple dresses and a blazer for work!
Thanks for the help - I'm notoriously bad at styling myself, and I'm looking forward to learning a bit more about what works on me.
I'm a complete stranger so I don't know how much my opinion is worth, but I love the blazer on you! Not so much the blouse - and I love polka dots and peter pan collars, but the ruffly sleeves and the boxy fit make it seem kind of meh.
ReplyDeleteI loved my first stitch fix box (kept 3 items & almost kept the 4th), and can't wait for my next.
I really like the blazer!
ReplyDeleteNora - your opinion is worth plenty! I agree about the blouse. It's going back tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
ReplyDeleteJoy - I'm leaning toward yes on the blazer, thanks to you and Nora and your comments. I have to give it one more try-on tonight, and then we'll see... Thanks for your feedback!
I'm on board with the blazer as well. I think it looks great open like that, no need to button it! It will dress up jeans and a t-shirt, or provide a little warmth over a dress this spring. The blue color is less "business-y" than black or gray would be, so it's more versatile and feminine. I guess it depends how much it costs, because you can get something similar online at ASOS (like this one) or JCrew Factory (this one) or Old Navy (this one) for pretty a decent price, although maybe not as well-made as the one from Stitch.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your hair is so cute and brings out your blue eyes. You are so pretty and you look fantastical- I can't tell you have extra baby weight on you at all, actually, so wear what makes you feel like yourself because yourself is awesome.
You guys are sooooo helpful! I'm in the office wearing the blue blazer right now. Thanks for the advice. :)
ReplyDeleteI kept the black dress, too, but sent back the rest. It turns out that the stripey dress was just too see-through, and the other two didn't quite fit my style for the price.
Thanks for helping! Let me know if any of you try Stitch Fix - I'd love to see what you try on!
