Gluten Free Anniversary - Share Your Story!

As of last week, I've been gluten-free for a year.

Besides learning how to navigate my way around a work lunch, dinner out, the Lord's supper, and the ever-so-awkward conversations about why I can't try "just a bite" of whatever cookie/muffin/scone someone has tirelessly slaved over before knowing of my ailment, I've learned a whole host of other things.

I've learned compassion for those who have chronic illnesses, from a touch of rheumatism to multiple sclerosis.

I've learned patience in explaining an odd-sounding ailment to the curious.

I've learned love for good, tasty, nutritious food (and the occasional piece of gf bacon...).

I've learned gratitude for the friends, both online and in person, who have helped guide me through this transition.

I've learned thankfulness that I have discovered my need to be gluten-free during a time where there are abundant and delicious gluten-free products.

I've learned courage in being the one who's different, who packs her own food, who asks waiters necessary-but-often-annoying questions, who sometimes takes a gamble on food others proclaim to be gf, and sometimes nibbles on almonds from her purse instead.

I know my own gf story, but what's yours? When did you figure out that you needed to go gf, and what have you learned in the process? What frustrates you about having to be gf, and what do you love about it? Share!

  1. Happy anniversary! I'm finally at the point where I love everything about being gluten-free. I love feeling good, having energy, being generally happy without food mood swings. I've learned to love cooking. I love the many options we now have available to us. I love how gfers have formed a community for supporting each other and sharing tips. I just love being gluten-free! But I definitely couldn't say that after year one. Hope you can get there sooner than I did!
