Quaker Steak and Lube

Ah, the mixed-blessing of dining out.

I have such a love/hate relationship with most restaurants now. After being gluten free for several years, I'm finding that I've become a bit more picky in terms of what excites me in a restaurant. Merely being able to eat something there, however, no longer makes me excited.

Enter Quaker Steak and Lube. I went here a few days ago for a work lunch with some colleagues. They were kind enough to search out a restaurant with gluten free options, which I deeply appreciated. Having never eaten at Quaker, I looked forward to trying something new.

Sadly, it was a bit disappointing.

To begin, the gluten free menu I printed off of their website was outdated. The two things I tried to order were no longer on the menu. So the final thing I settled on was a plate of regular chicken wings with fries. I'm not a big fan of wings, but they seem to be the thing to try at Quaker, so I thought I'd give them a go.

I spoke with my waitress and then a manager about their dedicated fryer. They both assured me that the wings and fries from the dedicated fryer were safe and that I would love them.

Then my waitress came back a few minutes later and said that she checked with the chef and there was not a dedicated fryer. There was supposed to be one, but the oil had "probably" been contaminated.

I asked what I could eat. She hemmed and hawed before coming up with a suggestion.

Grilled chicken on a bed of iceberg lettuce.

Sigh.

On the positive side, they were diligent and double-checked the fryer, which I appreciated. I didn't get sick afterward, which I very, very much appreciated.

But at the same time... $9 for chicken and iceberg lettuce at a semi-fast food restaurant? Not going to cut it. You cannot offer a "gluten free menu"and only offer me grilled chicken and iceberg lettuce. C'mon, friends. Not cool.

Still, since this is one of the few restaurants midway between me and a few of my colleagues who live near Milwaukee, I know I'll be back. But if there was another option at that same roadside junction, I'd go there instead in a heartbeat.

Have you ever eaten at Quaker Steak & Lube? What was your experience?

I have been gluten free five years and I love, love, love Quaker steak and lube!! They do not have a gluten free menu, but an allergen report that gets updated yearly, ask for that. They are super friendly, some of the servers aren't as knowledgeable but the kitchen is. I usually get a burger (phenomenal) but have gotten a number of other items. Delicious salads, good appetizers. They can convert a lot of things if you ask. Have been eating there a year, no problems. Nor did my mom have any problems and she is super super sensitive celiacs.
