Geer Street Garden

As much as I'm grateful for chain restaurants with solid gluten free offerings (I'm looking at you, Red Robin, Mellow Mushroom, and P.F. Chang's!), my first love will always be the local spots. The special, one-of-a-kind eateries.

It really says something about an establishment when they go the extra mile to offer gluten free meals. It isn't easy, goodness knows.

While in Durham, my husband and I had the opportunity to dine at Geer Street Garden, a local spot recommended to us by April from Gluten Hates Me.

It was phenomenal.

My husband ordered the tamales with black beans.

I ordered the pork chop with roasted apples, arugula, and mashed potatoes. I'm a total sucker for mashed potatoes.

Everything was fresh and local, and my husband proclaimed the tamale one of the best he's ever had (and this from someone who grew up in Los Angeles and has eaten more than his share of Mexican food!).

The menu does not list the gluten free offerings, but the servers are all knowledgeable and well trained. Apparently Geer Street's owner's wife has Celiac disease herself, so it is a very safe bet for safe eating.

What's your favorite local spot for gluten free dinners?
