The Dreaded Glucose Test

If you're pregnant, you know all about the delightful prenatal tests you get to undergo as a mother-to-be. Blood is drawn. Urine samples are required. (Ew. I know.) You get weighed and measured and commented upon from the first appointment to the last. Depending on the date of the appointment, I've heard from our doctor/nurse/and/or/midwife the following:

"You're measuring a little small."

"You're measuring a little big."

"You're right on target."

Which leads me to believe that this is not quite as exact a science as people tend to believe. It's a baby, friends, not a set of check-boxes and measurements.

I have the glucose test rite-of-passage coming up in a few weeks. It's a test for gestational diabetes where the doctors figure out how well your body processes sugar.

It also involves drinking THIS:

Ew.

Some women have told me it tastes like orange Hi-C or Kool-aid (which sounds manageable). Others have said it tastes like drinking pure syrup (less manageable). In a few weeks, when we go in for this required test, I'll report back how delicious the drink was and if I was able to keep it all down.

But in the meantime, for all you mamas-to-be (and someday mamas-to-be!) out there who have Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, rest easy about what's in this mystery drink. It may not taste great, but it's 100% gluten free!

See?

Finally - a medical product that labels for gluten. Now if only the other medical and pharmaceutical manufacturers would all get on board! A girl can dream, can't she?

  1. I had mine done a few weeks ago. Yes. It tasted to me like McDonalds orange drink. I had no issues during the test. I hope it goes well for you.
