The Randomest, Best Surprise Ever

Have you ever received a surprise so out of the blue, so generous, and so unexpected that it made you smile for the next three days straight?

I did!

A couple of days ago a family in town--one we don't know particularly well, but who knows of my gluten free status--called me and left a message. It was totally random. Totally unexpected. And totally delightful.

"We have about ten mini gluten free cakes," the message went, "and we were wondering if you would like them."

Can you IMAGINE a better phone message for an 8-months pregnant lady to hear? Whoa.

This family hosts a local sports tournament with a lot of food, so they needed the freezer space before this weekend. One of the family members has Celiac disease, so they always have some gf goodies lying around, but these just weren't going to fit as they made room for their tournament food.

A day after the phone call, our doorbell rang and we met two local guys on the front porch. They smiled and held out an armload of cakes. It was like a mirage of utter gluten free goodness.

To top it all off, its been upwards of 98 degrees outside for the past month, which is unheard of for Wisconsin. It's much too hot to turn on our oven, but I've been craving baked goods like nobody's business. Having cakes show up on the doorstep was like having manna--okay, maybe sweetened frosted manna?--rain down from heaven.

The cakes? Delightful. Vanilla with vanilla frosting from French Meadow Bakery, each one about 5-6" - enough for two people to share, or one pregnant lady to snack on all day.

This family will be getting one heckuva thank you card, that's all I have to say!

What's the best gluten free surprise you've ever received?
