CSA - Local, Organic, Delicious

This is our first year as part of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). We live in southern Wisconsin, so we've joined up with Angelic Organics.

(No, the "Angelic" part has nothing to do with me being a minister or why we chose them, though their produce is heavenly!)

It took us awhile to find a CSA because many of the ones closet to us market themselves primarily in Chicago, even though the "Windy City" is a good hour and forty-five minutes away from our little community. When we finally stumbled upon Angelic Organics and learned that it is only fifteen minutes from our house, we were thrilled.

Every two weeks we pick up a giant box of veggies, a box of fruit, and two cartons of eggs. All fresh. All organic. Most local (some of the fruit comes from as far away as Washington State, since we can't grow certain things in Wisconsin!).

I love how the eggs are all different sizes and colors. We gobble these up so fast.

Their produce is some of the best I've ever eaten. Because it is so fresh, it stays through the two weeks when properly stored (most of it bagged and in the fridge), and we have fruits and veggies to spare.

My current favorite? These killer Rainier cherries and the world's sweetest blueberries! They taste like candy.

Our area has been hard-hit by drought, so we've been praying for our farmers at church. They're struggling, to be sure. But some are still managing to churn out fantastic crops, drought or no.

One of our favorite parts about Angelic is that they send us an email update the day before we pick up our boxes. The update tells us what to expect (kale! sweet corn! leeks!) and even gives a few helpful recipes. Each bi-weekly box comes with a newsletter telling us about the people who grew our produce.

We love trying new foods, and have even discovered some favorites. I never knew that green onions could be so sweet, or that tatsoi sautéed in lime juice and ginger could be so flavorful.

The only things so far I haven't been a fan of were the kohlrabi (ugh... so... turnip-y) and the beets. I just can't get my head around beets, and I've tried them several different ways. I no longer hate them, but they will be the last thing I fish out of that veggie box for dinner.

Where do you get your fruits and veggies?
