We go into mourning around here when our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) ends for the season. Obviously you can't grow much in northern Illinois in the wintertime, so we understand, but we really miss our fresh kale and radishes and squash and tomatoes.
This year we also picked up a fruit share from (wait for it) Fruit Share - a box of organic fruit we get each week. Sadly, the fruit isn't local, but there isn't much fruit that grows in Wisconsin, and the fruit that does grow has a fairly short season.
The fruit was delicious. So delicious that, when I traveled with a packed lunch that included some of the Fruit Share blueberries, I called my husband on the phone and said,
"Go to the fridge RIGHT NOW and try these. RIGHT now."
Our CSA ends in the late fall, but Fruit Share ships year round! We get a box every two weeks, and the produce is always outstanding. They ship whatever's ripest and in season, and each box comes with an explanation of the farms each fruit came from, which is fun. I love reading about organic citrus groves in California, blueberry fields in Oregon, and apple orchards in Washington.
Where do you get your winter produce?
