("Sweet potatoes? Whatever, Mom. Can I go play in my room now?")
Other friends who have tried Baby Led Weaning (BLW) have told us that they had similar experiences. Up until their babies were eight or nine months old, solids just didn't hold the same appeal as, well, warm milk.
When you aren't spoon-feeding a baby, they regulate how much they take in and if they aren't interested, they won't eat much in the way of solids on any given day.
My son still nurses regularly, so we aren't worried about his caloric intake. Our pediatrician has encouraged us to give him some rice cereal, but the two times we tried that he didn't poo for a week. Not ideal.
Still, for any of you worried about gluten with your baby, we did discover one good thing:
Gluten free rice cereal! Woot!
Gerber is gluten free, and Beech Nut said they were when I called their hotline. So those are two good options for those of you pushing the rice cereal with your little ones.
For now we're going to lay off the rice cereal and count on natural sources for iron - egg yolks, greens, green beans, and garbanzos. When he's in the mood for solids, which is only occasionally, the cooked, mushy garbanzos are some of his favorite finger food snacks.
Have you tried Baby Led Weaning? Or are you on the rice cereal wagon? If so - have you had better luck than we have?
